Frequently Asked Questions

Below are questions I've been asked about school leadership and my responses

Describe how you have used data to set measurable goals to improve student learning.

I team with our school leadership team, content teams, as well as the whole school staff, instructional coach and/or Directors. I've incorporated school data delves through root cause analysis to inform our school SLO for the following year, which feeds our content team SLOs, including strategic action steps to support goals. External metrics, (STAR, ACT, ACT Aspire) are those used to triangulate data in content teams using the PDSA model for continuous improvement, heavily dependent on the ASW (Analyzing Student Work) tuning protocol from teacher assessments to inform next instructional steps.

What part of your education or work experience has been most valuable to you? Why?

As I've come into my own now as building principal, the opportunities to authentically CONNECT with others are hands-down most valuable. This is with my extended network of colleagues, with whom I learn, grow, & am curious. It is with my current students, staff & families, too. The reason why connections are valuable are two-fold. First, my WHY is "Impact Through Connections." I'm a connector, and it revealed itself clearly when I took the 5 Voices Assessment! Second, connection aligns with my two core values: practicing INTEGRITY and being ME.
As a leader, how do you demonstrate your care for the growth and development of your workforce?
Next to Integrity my other core value is Be Me. I enjoy being treated as a human being first. I intentionally build in time for authentic connections to teachers & staff, as well as learners and families. I visit classrooms everyday, providing positive recognition on what I get to see, hear, and how I interact with kids. Each day, however, I'm most authentic face to face. In fact, it's been among one of the highest-rated areas in climate check-ins as I continue to learn and grow on this leadership journey.

What factors do you think most contribute to student success?

Beyond being an instructional expert, the single most important factor hands down is relationships. One of the benefits I currently have as a high school principal in a small school is knowing ALL my kids, not just their name. I take pride in being able to connect on a personal level with all kids because I know at least one thing about them, and if I don't I make it a point to learn something to leverage in conversations with teachers, families support staff, as well as community partners to examine ways to holistically support individuals.

What are the three most critical things you would do in a school to accelerate student growth and ensure that every child is learning?

Above all else, I will learn by experiencing and listening. It's important to understand the learning culture and honor the work that has been done for kids. Without collaboration, however, ALL kids' needs won't be met. Therefor, I take these steps:
First, I align structures for built-in school collaboration time for content teams. Next, team with experts & leaders to educate staff on effective PLCs, the vehicle to drive toward increased achievement for ALL. Third, model what effective PLCs are, what they look like, and remain committed to providing time for teams to begin working in a Professional Learning Community. I am right there with teams, learning with them, asking tough questions, getting curious, pushing thinking, & providing resources all the while to meet ALL students' needs.
